Every year, thousands of athletes across the world sign up for the CrossFit Open, and right here in Northwest Arkansas from Bentonville all the way to Fayetteville, local gyms light up with Friday Night Lights events, packed heats, and a whole lot of community energy. At Maximum Performance in Rogers, we see a predictable trend this time of year:More volume, great. More intensity, also great. And more nagging injuries, not so great. Let’s break down what the Open actually is, and how to stay healthy through it.

What Is the CrossFit Open?

The Open is a worldwide, online competition that typically runs for three about weeks. Each week, one workout is released. Athletes complete it at their local affiliate and submit their score online. You’re judged against people in your division, age bracket, state and within your own gym. One of the biggest things is that it’s not just for elite competitors. There are multiple divisions that you can participate in:

Rx (as prescribed). This is your more competition ready people. The members who can do all the movements as written in workouts.

Scaled. These competitors can accomplish most of the movements in a crossfit workout with some modification whether that is changing the weight or lowering the difficulty of a component of the workout.

Foundations/beginner. These are your newbies. Workouts are scaled back for an entry level competitor.

Age groups (Teen, 35+, 40+, etc.)

Adaptive, one of my favorite divisions. Think of this more like the paralympics. These athletes are further broken up by their permanent impairments: Upper Extremity, Lower Extremity, Seated (with hip function), Seated (without hip function), Vision, Neuromuscular, Short Stature, and IntellectualMost participants are everyday adults (and some teens)  parents, professionals, former athletes who just want to test their fitness and be part of something bigger.

Why You Should Consider Doing the Open

Even if you’re not trying to qualify for anything, the Open has benefits:

1. Built-In Accountability: You train differently when it “counts.” You’re more likely to push yourself. Getting that skill you’ve been trying at for months gets easier.

2. Community: Friday Night Lights in Northwest Arkansas is more than a workout. It's a connection. It’s one of the best times to meet other members of your gym and cheer them on.

3. Measurable Progress: The Open provides benchmarks you can compare year to year. A lot of gyms will repeat Open workouts, and sometimes during the Open season they will repeat past workouts. For many people, the Open becomes a yearly fitness check-in.

4. Mental Growth: Managing nerves and pacing under pressure builds resilience. The workouts can be hard. But they’re doable.

The Most Common Injuries During the Open

At our clinic in Rogers, we typically see:

Shoulder Irritation:High-rep kipping pull-ups, snatches, and overhead work can flare up underlying mobility or stability issues.

Low Back Strain: High-volume deadlifts or repeated flexion under fatigue are common triggers.

Knee Pain: Wall balls, pistols, and jumping movements can aggravate patellar tendon irritation.

Achilles & Calf Strain: Double-unders and high-volume box jumps spike tendon load quickly.

The Open doesn’t cause injuries. Poor load management does.

Why Injury Risk Increases During the Open

Athletes increase intensity beyond normal training levels. Workouts are often repeated to improve scores. Adrenaline masks fatigue signals. Volume changes abruptly. If you’re not gradually prepared for those demands, your tissues will let you know.

How to Stay Healthy During the CrossFit Open

Choose the Right DivisionScaled is smart for most athletes. Ego doesn’t earn bonus points.Talk to your coaches about what division you should be in.

Warm Up With Intention

Prepare shoulders, hips, and core for the specific demands of that week’s workout. Make sure you’ve worked through the movements of that workout ahead of time so your body knows what to expect.

Limit Retests

One redo max — and only if your body tolerates it.Trying 5 times over three days will wreck you.

Prioritize Recovery

Sleep. Protein. Carbs. Hydration. Light movement on off days focusing on movements to help refresh your body. Respect Pain SignalsSharp, progressive, or radiating pain is not something to “push through.” If your movement is altered or if you have to slow down because of pain or discomfort,
