Spring sports season in Northwest Arkansas means packed schedules: track meets, baseball tournaments, soccer games, and everything in between. As a parent, watching your kid compete is one of the best parts of the year. But it also means paying attention to the things that can derail a season: overuse injuries.Youth overuse injuries are more common than most parents realize, and they're often preventable. Here's what you need to know.
Why Young Athletes Are Especially Vulnerable
Growing athletes face a challenge that adult athletes don't: their bones are still developing. Growth plates, areas of soft cartilage near the ends of long bones, are more vulnerable to repetitive stress than mature bone. When a young athlete does the same movements over and over without adequate recovery, those growth plates can become irritated or injured.Common conditions we see in youth athletes include Osgood-Schlatter disease (knee), Sever's disease (heel), Little Leaguer's shoulder and elbow, and shin splints. All of them share a common thread: too much load, not enough recovery.
Warning Signs to Watch For
Pain that gets worse with activity and improves with rest
Limping, altered movement patterns, or favoring one side
Complaints of soreness that last more than a day or two after competition
Swelling, tenderness to the touch, or visible asymmetry
Reluctance to participate in activities they normally love
What Parents Can Do
The best thing a parent can do is take early symptoms seriously not dismiss them as 'growing pains.' A brief assessment when symptoms first appear is far better than waiting until a minor issue becomes a season-ending injury.Beyond that: make sure your athlete is getting adequate sleep, eating well, and not specializing in a single sport year-round without breaks. Multi-sport athletes and those with planned off-seasons consistently have better injury outcomes (and better performance overall).
How We Can Help
At Maximum Performance, we work with youth athletes across all sports. A movement assessment can identify early signs of overload, compensatory patterns, and areas of restriction before they become problems. When injuries do happen, we focus on getting athletes back to sport safely and not just pain-free, but movement-competent.
